My name is Jeffrey Roelvink, I started working as a full-time poultry veterinarian at Poultry Practice de Achterhoek immediately after graduating in 2016. The interest in poultry started early; I am intrigued by the fact that an animal can lay an egg day after day with the size of more than 3% of the body weight (more than 2.6 kg according to human standards).
The most beautiful thing about my work at the moment is the structural farm supervision and the contact you develop with the farmer, rearing supervisor, feed advisor and hen supplier. A proactive attitude and “keeping a finger on the pulse” can in many cases prevent problems and have a positive effect on the flock performance. It is the ability to create this difference that makes it extra fun for me.
What is also unique for the work is the possibility to combine flock diagnostics with a post-mortem analysis and additional diagnostics on specifically selected animals. Not only does this offer the possibility to get a complete picture of the flock performance, but on the other hand this is really unique as this combination is not possible in any other field of veterinary expertise.
